Harvard University
MassIMPACT has a collaboration with the
Criminal Justice Institute (CJI) and the Berkman Center of Internet
and Society (BCIS), of Harvard Law School, and other organizations
and agencies at the Jamaican Governement, Wayne and Wax, and
TSI, to explore ways of using technology to bridge the digital
divide here in the US and abroad, as part of the world wide Cyber
Tree initiative. Currently, the collaboration is focusing its
efforts abroad on prisoners in the Jamaican correctional facilities
in Kingston, Jamaica (WI). This collaboration has led to many
successful results, including an evolving active design for a
digital media technology program for prisons and educational
institutions in Kingston and other parts of Jamaica. The pilot
of the digital media program has illustrated how Digital Music
can be used to assist in the rehabilitation process by giving
voice and reverence to the lives of prisoners. The collaboration,
headed by Professors Charles Ogletree and Charles Nesson, of
Harvard Law School, is now moving a new stage of implementation.
Over the past years, the success of the collaborative
work has led to many panels at Harvard Law School and the Kennedy
School of Government, where members shared their challenges,
successes, and lessons learned with the broader community. Members
have also been able to share their experiences through Internet
webcasts, as well as pubic radio broadcasts here in the US as
well as in Jamaica. The Berkman Center, founded by Professor
Nesson, is a research program founded to explore cyberspace,
share in its study, and help pioneer its development. The Center
represents a network of faculty, students, fellows, entrepreneurs,
lawyers, and virtual architects working to identify and engage
with the challenges and opportunities of cyberspace.
The Criminal Justice Institute is Harvard Law School's
curriculum-based clinical program in criminal law. Under the
direction of Professor Charles Ogletree with the support of full-time
clinical instructors and staff, the Criminal Justice Institute
(CJI) offers a unique union of classroom instruction and hands-on
experience for Harvard Law students, valuable service to indigent
criminal defendants and juveniles, and research in a variety
of criminal justice areas.
